CLAWSOME REDHAWK AWARD
The La Veta Student Council is proud to introduce the CLAWSOME REDHAWK AWARD for the 2026 school year and beyond.
This recognition will be given to one Jr. High and High School student who each live out the CLAWS ideals in their daily school life.
These students will be nominated by and voted on by the Student Council based on the following criteria:
Demonstrates and lives by the C.L.A.W.S. Motto: Community-Leadership-Attitude-Work Ethic-Safety
Is academically eligible
Attends school on a regular basis with no unexcused absences
Student Council Members are not eligible to receive this award.

This past weekend, La Veta School Board Directors and school administration attended the 85th Colorado School Boards Association (CASB) Convention at the Broadmoor Hotel.
Proudly featured in the convention’s digital art showcase—displayed in the main event center for all attendees to enjoy over three days—were works by our very own Kayden Romero and Titus Ferrari!
La Veta Schools are home to scores of talented student artists, and we are thrilled to see our students’ creativity recognized and celebrated on a statewide stage. Congratulations to Kayden and Titus for representing our school community so well! 👏✨

The event will include tributes from each class, an open mic for those who wish to share, and a walk around the building in his honor.

JJ Hansen hails from the great state of Pennsylvania and joined the district in 2022. With more than a decade of experience teaching a wide range of subjects and grade levels, JJ now brings his passion and expertise to his role as the K–12 music teacher. He loves guiding students as they grow their skills, uncover their talents, and discover the joy that music can bring.
Outside the classroom, JJ enjoys bodybuilding, spending quality time with his family and dog, getting outside in nature, and exploring his entrepreneurial spirit.
Finals are approaching and our students are finishing the semester strong! This month we're focusing on Work Ethic - following through and supporting each other.

Mr. Sciacca received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Council on High School/College Relations last week for his 20+ years of dedicated service to education. Well deserved!

As we return from Thanksgiving break, our school community is navigating a difficult time following the unexpected loss of Mr. Hornung. Our hearts go out to his family, and we are grateful for the support of our La Veta community as we grieve together. A memorial is being planned in his honor, and we'll share details soon.
With 10.5 school days left before winter break, our students and staff are staying focused while supporting one another through this season.

Since joining the District in 2007 as a school counselor, I’ve had the incredible privilege of growing alongside this amazing school community. I currently serve as the Director of Student Services and as Treasurer for the Colorado Council on High School and College Relations, a statewide organization dedicated to helping students bridge the path from high school to college. I’m also proud to serve on our Chronic Absenteeism Committee, working to support student success and engagement.
What I love most about this district is the true sense of community—it’s something special that includes every student, staff member, and family.
Outside of school, you’ll probably find me fly-fishing, making knives, working on European mounts, or spending time with my beautiful family.
Samantha Stonecipher is a proud La Veta School District alum who’s been part of the Redhawk family for the past four years. She brings her passion for learning and leadership to the classroom, where she teaches a mix of agriculture education and science courses. Beyond the classroom, Samantha wears many hats — she’s an FFA advisor, Junior High volleyball coach, and High School girls’ golf coach!
Her favorite part of being a Redhawk is seeing her students grow and succeed — whether it’s mastering a new skill in the shop, excelling on the court, or discovering their potential in the classroom.
When she’s not at school, you’ll find Samantha out ranching, camping, or spending quality time with her family.
