La Veta School District RE-2 marked Fire Prevention Week with a schoolwide fire drill and fire safety presentations for preschool and elementary students by the La Veta Fire Protection District.
The district thanks La Veta Fire, La Veta EMS, and the Spanish Peaks Hospital District for their continued partnership. Today and every day, these community partners show up for our community and our students. Fire and EMS crews cover our junior high and high school football games. Recently, these partners were also instrumental in Flight for Life's homecoming football delivery - an event the community loves. We appreciate the community spirit that staff and volunteers from these organizations model for our students.
Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), runs October 4 to 10 this year. The 2026 national theme, "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on lithium-ion batteries in phones, laptops, tools, e-bikes, and scooters. The district encourages families to test smoke alarms, practice a home escape plan, and charge devices safely. Learn more at nfpa.org/fpw.
The partnership continues on Wednesday, October 14, with a Traffic Safety Day arranged by the Spanish Peaks Hospital District for students in grades 8-12 who are driving or preparing to drive. The day opens with ThinkFast, an interactive, game-show style traffic safety program, followed by the Colorado State Patrol's seat belt awareness campaign and a demonstration of the Seat Belt Convincer, a simulator that shows the force of a low-speed crash.
Thanks to all involved in keeping our students healthy, safe, and informed!
