Hire marks key step in district’s planned leadership transition
The La Veta School District RE-2 Board of Education has approved the hire of Erica Switzer as the district’s next K-12 Principal, effective July 6, 2026. The decision followed a unanimous recommendation from a search committee that represented administrators, licensed staff, and a community advisory member.
The Principal position is part of a planned three-year administrative restructuring approved by the Board in March 2026. The plan formally separates the Superintendent and Principal roles, which have been combined under a single administrator since 2023, and establishes a dedicated instructional leader for the district’s K–12 program. The new structure is designed to give the district’s instructional program, including curriculum, teacher coaching, and day-to-day school leadership, the focused attention it warrants on a unified single-campus site.
Switzer brings instructional leadership experience from Pueblo School District 60, where she has served as MTSS Coordinator at D60 Online School since 2024 and previously as a TOSA/Engagement Coordinator and classroom teacher. She holds a Master of Science in Teaching and Learning with Principal Licensure from Colorado State University-Global, a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Colorado State University-Pueblo, and an active Colorado Initial Principal License (K-12). Prior to her work in education, she served in the United States Army.
“Erica brings the instructional leadership skills, the heart for kids, and the rural-school sensibility we were looking for,” said Superintendent Bree Jones, Ed.D. “Our search committee was thoughtful and thorough, and their unanimous recommendation reflects what we heard throughout the interview - a candidate who is grounded in restorative practices, data-informed instruction, and strong family partnerships. We are excited to welcome her to La Veta.”
Switzer will begin a transition period under a supplementary agreement on June 2, 2026, and will assume her full Principal role on July 6, 2026. She will report to Superintendent Jones, who continues in her role as Superintendent under the district’s phased leadership plan.
